Uma cidade em torno de um rio... Numa das margens a memória da cidade medieval na outra margem a ambição da modernidade e ligação com a cidade antiga.

As necessidades do local e a sua historia, definem o mote da intervenção...dinamizar o antigo centro histórico da cidade fazendo-o comunicar com a sua área envolvente e restante cidade, dando-lhe uma nova alma e restituindo as vivências perdidas de outros tempos.

A solução, passa por uma ponte que se transcenda no próprio sentido da palavra, que seja mais do que uma simples ligação entre dois extremos ... do que um simples passar para o lado de lá ... mais ainda do que um mero gesto rotineiro de quem necessita alcançar a outra margem. A ponte, é aqui historia e memória, local de encontro e convivência, repouso e contemplação ... é praça, faz cidade.

O local onde outrora “habitou” a primeira ponte existente na cidade, da qual só restam memórias, da agora lugar a uma sucessão ritmada de elementos, que se estendem ao longo do rio percorrendo os lugares de uma memória apagada pelo tempo. Este conjunto de elementos separados entre si, como se de fragmentos dessa mesma memória se tratassem, conferem leveza e transparência à nova ponte fazendo com que o seu corpo se solte ... se deixe diluir na água ... na paisagem ... na cidade. A sua presença é quase negada pela transparência que oferece a quem a percorre, nem que seja com um simples olhar.

A dinâmica do movimento imposto pelo percurso aliada à fluidez da sua forma origina a criação de uma bolsa de descompressão, uma praça/miradouro, que alimenta o percurso e a vida social da cidade transformando o mero acto de travessia em algo socialmente mais complexo.

O rio que outrora fora um mero espectador do quotidiano das suas margens assume agora um papel activo na criação de fluxos e dinâmicas populacionais, convertendo-se num espaço/praça que pontua a vida social da cidade.

Este novo “habitante” da cidade encerra em si a memória do passado e a ambição do futuro.

A river-based city ...on one side of the riverbank the memory of the old medieval city ... on the other, the intent of modernity and the connection with the old city center.

The needs of the place and its history define the subject of the intervention: to energize the city’s old historic centre by making it communicate with its new surrounding area, as well as with the rest of the city, by giving it a new soul and restoring the lost experiences from another time.

Part of the solution is a bridge which transcends the literal meaning of the word, being more than a simple connection between two places, more than simply passing to the other side, even more than an ordinary movement made by those who need to reach the other bank. The bridge is, here, history and memory, meeting point, a place to rest and contemplate…it’s a square, it makes a city.

The place where formerly “lived” the first bridge the city had, of which there are only memories left, is now a rhythmical element succession, which extends along the river travelling across the places of a memory erased by time. This collection of elements, separated from each other as fragments of that same memories, give lightness and clarity to the new bridge, allowing its body to be set free ... to dilute itself in the water… in the landscape ... in the city. Its presence is almost denied by the clarity that it offers to those who travel across it, even if only with a simple glance.

The dynamics of the movement imposed by the route, allied to the fluidity of its form, origins the creation of a decompression bag, a square/viewpoint that feeds the route and the social life of the city, transforming the ordinary crossing action in something way more complex, socially speaking.

The river, who formerly was a simple viewer of its own banks’ everyday, now assumes an active role by creating population Dynamics and flows, becoming a place/square that punctuates the social life of the city.

This new “Inhabitant” of the city has in itself the memory of the past and the ambition of the future.
